A free online ruler that stays to scale
Easy Online Ruler is an online ruler that draws true physical units on your display. Most pages still assume 96 CSS pixels per inch — a leftover from early Windows. A modern phone can exceed 450 hardware pixels per inch; a large monitor can sit near 80. Without calibration, an “inch” on screen is only a drawing. This online ruler tool stores your pixels-per-inch locally so one inch, one centimeter, and one millimeter match the object you rest on the glass.
Use it as an online ruler in inches when you need a 12 inch online ruler across a laptop lid, or switch to an online ruler in cm and an online ruler mm for metric work. Dual-scale mode prints inches on one side of the edge and centimeters on the other, the way a shop ruler does. Tick density follows the unit: sixteenths of an inch, millimeters inside each centimeter, and a dedicated mm online ruler when you need every millimetre marked.
An accurate online ruler is only as good as its PPI. Auto-detect compares screen width, height, and device pixel ratio against known phones, tablets, and laptops. If several models share a signature, you pick the name. External monitors are excluded on purpose: the same 1920×1080 framebuffer can be 22 inches or 32 inches, and guessing would quietly stretch every tick. For those panels, type the diagonal or use credit card calibration — the ISO/IEC 7810 ID-1 width of 85.60 mm is the same on every bank card.
After you save a profile, this becomes an online ruler actual size and an online ruler to scale. Browser zoom is watched; pinch-zoom on a phone will warn you because CSS pixels no longer map 1:1 to the panel. Keep zoom at 100%, place the object against Top, Right, Bottom, or Left, and read from zero. Designers often enable all four edges at once. Students measuring a printout typically keep the bottom edge and drag a span on the stage; the HUD copies inches, cm, and mm together.
People search for an online ruler camera when they want the phone lens to estimate length. Camera math needs distance and field of view, so those readings stay approximate. Easy Online Ruler does not open the camera. For small parts, a real online ruler on the screen is more repeatable than AR. For rooms and furniture, use a tape or an AR measure app — this tool is built for objects that fit on the display.
The online ruler 12 inch view is simply the physical width of your window after calibration. On a 15.6-inch laptop you usually get a full foot plus leftover centimeters; on a phone you get a short online ruler cm along the long edge. Switch units with 1 (cm), 2 (inches), and 3 (mm). Toggle dual scale with D, crosshair with C, guides with G, fullscreen with F. Click a ruler to drop a dashed guide. None of this requires an account. Calibration never leaves the browser.
Word Online and PowerPoint Online also show “rulers,” but those marks document margins and slide coordinates. They are not an online ruler inches actual size. If you need to check a button diameter, a stamp, a seam allowance, or a USB stick, keep this page open, calibrate once, and measure on the edge. That is the difference between a layout aid and a free online ruler that pretends to be maple and metal for a moment — then gets out of the way.
